San Diego Chargers - 2006 Preseason Analysis Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer, last year’s NFL Coach of the Year, is back with the San Diego Chargers this year. He is quite a coach and the San Diego Chargers are lucky to have him around. Although the San Diego chargers have a great coach, this may be a year they struggle. They released quarterback Drew Brees, which could prove to be a real let down for the team. They are turning over their Offense to Philip Rivers, a 3rd year quarterback who has only attempted 30 passes in two seasons. However, they have faith he can handle the job. Most experts doubt that fact however. Their shining star for the Chargers team is LaDainian Tomlinson, the running back. He is just in his 5th year and is already the Chargers all-time leading rusher. He has at least 1,000 rushing yards and ten touch downs in each of his previous seasons. He is truly a fantastic player and the Chargers really could not do much without him around this season. Marlon McCree, the safety acquired via free agency from the Carolina Panthers, and line backer Donnie Edwards will lead this struggling defense. If they can pull it together, they may have something better than what they had last year. There are so many “what ifs” with this team that it is hard to predict how they will do. Until everyone sees exactly what Philip Rivers is made of and how the defense holds up, no one will know how they will fair.
