NBA Playoffs: Inexperience versus Veterans

Perhaps the most glaring difference between teams in the NBA (national basketball association) playoffs occurs when inexperienced players play against veteran players. The author wishes to qualify this statement with inexperienced playoff athletes with veteran playoff athletes. As stated in another article, the playoffs are literally another type of season and should not be related to the regular season.

Teams who are good in the regular season do not necessarily fair well in the post-season. One great example of this are teams with young and talented players. Such teams and players often have great offenses and flashy moves, but lack the maturity and experience of veteran players. When such a team faces a team like the San Antonio Spurs or the Detroit Pistons, they usually crumble and fall flat on their face.

Veteran leadership can go a long way. Teams filled with young players but sprinkled with veterans can still do well in the playoffs. One such example is the 2005-06 Los Angeles Clippers. Though a relatively young team during the season, the Clippers enjoyed the veteran leadership of Sam Cassell, a long-time Minnesota Timberwolf and perennial playoff player. Cassell often motivated his team during tough times and thus helped his team advance into the second round. Unfortunately, they ran into the buzz saw that is the Phoenix Suns, yet, Cassell impacted his team greatly. He was a floor general and taught his young team the skills and fortitude necessary to win playoff basketball games.

On betting terms, when a team filled with inexperienced players plays a team with veterans, the result is usually lopsided. But, in the off chance that the inexperienced team keeps it close in the first half of game, the author highly recommends backing the veteran team in the second half.

Conventional betting strategy states that the better team plays better in the second half (after adjustments and the sort), and hence, the veteran team will usually pull away and beat its opponent with authority.

In closing, be wary of backing inexperience playoff teams against veteran teams in the NBA playoffs. Veteran leadership is also a factor to consider when looking into betting inexperienced teams.
