NBA Playoffs: Coaching
Like in the regular season, coaching in the NBA (national basketball association) playoffs is paramount to success. If a team does not have a strong coaching staff, such a team will have a hard time adjusting between quarters, halves, and full games. This article will hope to explain the significance of coaching and the advantage and luxury of some teams by having high basketball IQ coaches by their side.
Perhaps one of the best playoff basketball coaches of all time include Greg Popovich of the current San Antonio Spurs, Phil Jackson of the current Los Angeles Lakers, Pat Riley of the current Miami Heat, and Red Auerbach. Such coaches have elevated the game play of their teams and implemented great adjustments to compensate for previous inconsistencies in their past losses. A good, smart coach is hard to find. The above are but a sliver of the greatest coaches in recent history.
The coaching staff need also be considered, for they are the backbone and the assistants to the main head coach. The auxiliary coaches help individual players with their game and also offer motivational words of wisdom. The sports bettor cannot really handicap the coaching staff, hence, one can only rely on past history to see how such a team reacts to certain situations.
Inexperienced coaches do not do as well as experienced coaches in the NBA playoffs. As stated earlier, the playoffs are a different animal; and as such, new coaches cannot adequately prepare for the rigors and demands of such a tough situation, especially if they are on the road. But, such coaches need this time to learn, and given a few years under their belt, will coach better in the future.
The last corollary to coaching is looking for certain coaches who intentionally beat the spread by blowing out teams. Although not as common as during the regular season, some teams do still like to run up the score if they are allowed to by their coach. Mike D’Antoni of the current Phoenix Suns is one such coach. D’Antoni is a coach that if given the opportunity, will run up the score (a fact that will be useful for sports bettors).
