Miami Heat vs. Cleveland Cavaliers

by Kris Lazaro

12/25/07

The NBA gives a special gift for bettors and basketball enthusiasts alike when it presents 3 games on Christmas morning, all featuring some of the associations’ best athletes and marquee matchups.

The first game on the docket features the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers at the ‘Q’.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 Eastern; oddsmakers have made Cleveland an opening 5 point home favorite, but betting action has pushed the line down a bit to its current position of 4.5 at the time of writing.

Miami comes into this contest off a great win over the Utah Jazz, by the score of 104-102 (the Heat were home underdogs of 1 point last Saturday, December 22nd).  Although Miami is still trying to find its identity, the author likes the Heat in this situation.  As a team they have scored over 100 points 8 times in the last 10 games they have played.  This offensive production is hard to accomplish, and as such, betting on offensively strong teams as underdogs are strong, solid bets.  Although the Heat are 4-10 on the road thus far this season, they are a great bet against the spread (9-5 ATS).  Look for the Dwayne Wade and Shaq to shine.

Cleveland and the ‘Lebrons’ are struggling.  They have won 3 games in their last 10, while covering the same amount of contests in that same span.  Most recently, they are coming off an embarrassing loss to the Golden State Warriors as 3-point home favorites (they lost 105-96 last Sunday).  The author points out that it is never wise to bet on struggling favorites, especially with such a fishy line.

The author sees a close game throughout.  Miami will control the majority of the game, but in the end, superstar Lebron James will do just enough to get the W.  Take the points and enjoy the first game with ease.

Game prediction:  105-104 Cleveland.
