Using Days Rest Concept For Systems

When sports handicappers speak of days rest, they are generally referring to the amount of rest a team has coming into a game. Effectively understanding how days rest can help or hurt a team's likelihood to win against the spread (ATS) is an important sports handicapping tool.

NFL Football
The days rest concept applies in Football in regards to the bye week. Every football team will have one extra week off, referred to as a bye, during the regular season. They will generally be matched up with an opponent that has played the previous week. With the extra week to cool off from injuries and to scout their opponent, teams playing off of a bye generally perform much better.

NBA Basketball
The days rest concept in basketball is just that, days of rest from their previous game to their current game. Many basketall teams will be forced to have played on consecutive days which is not easy for a team to day considering each player generally plays about 20-40 minutes per night. If such a team is going up against a rested motivated foe, our tired team will generally perform poorly against the spread (ATS).

MLB Baseball
The days rest concept for MLB Baseball is not widely understood by sports handicappers but the general idea is that teams playing on consecutive days (against a different opponent) will do better if they won their previous game than if they did not. The reason for all of this is because momentum plays a huge part for baseball systems dynamics. A team that is winning will want to keep playing, a team that is losing will prefer the days of rest.
