Texas Christian University Horned Frogs vs. Houston University Cougars

12/28/07

This year’s edition of the Texas Bowl will feature two in-state teams, aptly from the state of Texas, who have ironically not faced each other since their last meeting 3 years ago in 2004.  The Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs battle the Houston University Cougars in a match up that will surely keep the scoreboard operator busy.  Oddsmakers have made the Cougars an opening favorite of 4 points with an opening total of 59.5 points.  Since then, the line has shifted to Cougars –6.5 and the total at 58.

TCU has had a mediocre season, going 7-5 and 5-6-1 against the number this season. Away from home they are 2-4 straight up and 1-4-1 against the spread.  TCU is lately coming off a great victory against the San Diego State Aztecs on the road, by the score of 45-33 (although they did not cover the 13 point spread given to them by the oddsmakers).  Unlike previous years, the Horned Frogs have not been as dominating as they were in previous years, nonetheless they are still solid and most importantly, offensively potent (they average 388.4 yards per game and 26.6 points per game).

The Houston Cougars also know a thing or two about scoring.  They average 513.2 yards per game and 36.3 points per game.  On the season they are 8-4, but a disappointing 4-7 against the spread.  Away from home they are 3-3 against the spread and straight up.  Houston is also coming off a beat down of Texas Southern, in which they demolish them by the score of 59-6 (this game was not lined on most sportsbooks).

Although on a superficial glance, the under might be a play, but to the astute eye, the over is actually a better play.  Houston and TCU’s record of ‘unders’ this year has given value to the ‘over’.  Bettors need to take advantage of such a fact and play according.  This should be a fun bowl game to watch, with either team winning by a 2+ touchdown margin of victory.

Game prediction:  57-45 Houston.
