Oddsmakers have made the Nittany Lions an opening 5.5-point favorite, with the line holding steady at the time of writing. Penn State has gone 8-4 on the season, while going 5-7 against the spread. On the road they are 2-3 straight up and a pathetic 1-4 against the spread. One of Penn State’s major strength’s is their defense, where they are allowing on average a meager 17.6 points and 306.6 yards to their opposition. Although they lost their last regular season game to division rival Michigan State, the Penn State Nittany Lions will be pumped up for this game under head coach Joe Paterno. The Texas A&M Aggies will field a squad that has gone 7-5 on the season, while going 5-6 against the spread. On the road, they are a horrible college team, going 1-4 straight up, but 2-3 against the spread. They are 2-3 in their last 5 games, most notably beating Texas in a wild game (they won 38-30 as 7 point home underdogs). In a season where the unexpected was expected, the Aggies played the role of spoiler as it prevented Texas to go to the Big 12 championship game. In this matchup, the author sees a fairly close game. In fact, the Aggies’ strength (rushing offense) is one of the Lions’ strengths (rushing defense). The author highly suggests taking the under in this game. Both units are complemented and scoring should be a premium in this matchup. Combined with the poor against the spread records of both teams, the author sees a very low scoring affair. Penn State should also do enough on offense to put this game away late in the second half. Game prediction: 17-9 Penn State. |
