Nevada Wolfpack vs. New Mexico Lobos

by Kris Lazaro

kris lazaro

The Nevada Wolfpack hope that the unfriendly confines of their next bowl game this Saturday will not affect the outcome of the contest.  The New Mexico Bowl, which will be held on December 22nd 2007 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will feature the Wolfpack of Nevada along with the Lobos of New Mexico.  Although there is a direct angle of homefield advantage for the Lobos (this being a virtual home game), the statistics would suggest that the home team might not necessarily win this game.

The Wolfpack are 6-6 on the season, along with a 5-6 record against the spread.  They are 2-4 in both the straight up and against the spread statistic away from home.  Utilizing the pistol offense, an offense similar to the shotgun formation, the Wolfpack are perennial contenders and solid bets when they are made underdogs.  They boast a strong running game, averaging 225.8 yards per game and 237.7 yards per away game.  As evidenced by past history, good running underdogs in bowl games are often a good bet.  The only down side with taking the ‘Pack is relying on their defense, a unit that is giving up on average 32.9 points and 403.9 yards to the opposition.  They come into this game by blowing out the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in their last contest by the score of 49-10 as 7 point home favorites.

The ‘home’standing New Mexico Lobos have an 8-4 straight up record with a 4-7 against the number record.  At home they are 5-1 straight up and 2-3 against the spread.  The Lobos are a pretty mediocre team, scoring on average 24.8 points and allowing 20.6 points to the opposition.  The author feels that the standard 3 point homefield advantage has been applied to this game, making the Lobos a field goal favorite for this game.  Nonetheless, the Lobos with their horrid ATS record will be exposed this Saturday by a much more talented and athletic squad in Nevada.

Game prediction:  28-27 Nevada.
