Michigan State Spartans vs. Boston College Eagles

12/28/07

The Michigan State Spartans take on the Boston College Eagles this Friday, December 28 at Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Florida for the annual CHAMPS Sports Bowl.  Oddsmakers made the high-flying BC Eagles an opening 3 point favorite, but the line has adjusted up due to public betting.

Michigan State is coming off a great victory against divisional rival Penn State in their last outing, by beating them to the score of 35-31 (they won and covered as 2.5 point home underdogs).  On the season, the Spartans are 7-5 in both their straight up and against the spread record.  Away from home, they are 2-3 straight up, but an amazing 4-1 against the spread.  Like most good bowl teams, the Spartans have a solid rushing game—averaging 200.3 rushing yards per game.  The author feels this will be the difference in the matchup, as BC’s rushing attack is not as efficient.

The Eagles have been an excellent team this year, as they went 10-3 on the season, but a paltry 6-6 against the number.  Away from home they are an impressive 4-1, but only 3-2 against the spread.  Boston College is fresh off the ACC Championship game and may be a little disappointed, as they lost to Virginia Tech by the score of 30-16 (they also failed to cover as 5 point underdogs).

The author feels that although the Eagles have a great bowl streak going, they will have their hands full this Friday.  The public is overwhelmingly on BC, as evidenced by ESPN SportsNations’ polls—91% of the people believe that BC will win this game.  Yet, the statistics would suggest otherwise.  Despite the win-loss discrepancy between these two teams, the Spartans and the Eagles are actually pretty evenly matched.  The author would not be surprised if this game went into overtime with either team winning by a field goal.

Game prediction:  34-31 Boston College.
