Boise State Broncos vs. East Carolina Pirates

by Kris Lazarokris lazaro

In what is perhaps the most ‘easiest’ game to predict this bowl season, as evidenced by the ESPN SportsNation on www.espn.com, the Boise State Broncos take on the East Carolina Pirates in the Hawai’i Bowl this Sunday, December 23rd 2007.  The public amazingly believes that the Broncos will beat the Pirates—even if this will be eventually true, the fact that 97.6% of voters chose the Broncos is an amazing statistics.  Oddsmakers have made the Broncos an early 11 point favorite, with the line strangely creeping down to 10.5 in some shops.

The Boise State Broncos have been a solid team this year—going 10-2 on the season, but a surprising 6-5 against the spread (apparently the oddsmakers have caught on to the Broncos).  Away from the blue turf, the Broncos are 3-2 straight up and 2-3 against the number.  The Broncos’ high power offense will surely be on display this Sunday, with stud quarterback Taylor Tharp behind center.  Tharp has thrown for 3,070 yards this season with a 68.3% completion record.  The offense has been rolling this season, scoring on average 42.8 points and 475.7 yards.  Defensively, the Broncos still need some tuning up, as evidenced by their defensive statistics (they are giving up 20.0 points and 326.5 yards to the opposition).

The East Carolina Pirates barely qualified for bowl season this year, with 7 wins and 5 losses to their credit (they are also 7-5 against the spread).  Away from home they are 3-3, but 4-2 against the spread.  They are led by quarterback Patrick Pinkney, who like Tharp, is an accurate passer.  He has a 60.2% passing completion record and has accumulated 1,240 yards this season.  Although the Pirates are not as offensively talented as the Broncos’, the author feels that the public has over reacted in this game.  According to the author, the game will be much closer than what most believe will happen.  The author predicts that the Broncos win the game, but fail to cover the number.

Game prediction 44-40 Boise.
