Joe Gibbs Profile
Joe Gibbs, coach of the Washington Redskins, was born in North Carolina in 1940. His football history includes playing tight end, offensive guard and linebacker in college, and, of course, coaching. Gibbs coaching career started with college teams in 1964. He was part of the coaching staff of San Diego State and Florida State. He was hired as head coach of the Washington Redskins in 1981. It was only his second season with the team when they won the Super Bowl, beating the Miami Dolphins. The Redskins continued to achieve with Gibbs's coaching, and the next year they returned to the Super Bowl. However, despite being the favorite, they lost to the Los Angeles Raiders. Some folks believe that the loss may have been partly due to overconfidence on the part of the Redskins team. A few years later, the Redskins returned to the NFC Championship, where they lost to the New York Giants. But Gibbs proved his worth when, the next year, the Redkins won the Super Bowl. Then, Gibbs surprised many folks when he announced his early retirement in 1993. At that time, Gibbs suggested that health problems and the desire to spend more time with loved ones was his motivation for retirement. Gibbs coaching record includes numerous achievements, including being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1996. He won three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks, and is the only NFL coach in history to accomplish this achievement. |
