Probably one of the most famous and popular current NFL coaches, Bill Belichick, coach of the New England Patriots, was born in 1952. He started his coaching career in 1975--the same year he graduated from Wesleyan University--as Special Assistant to the Head Coach of the Baltimore Colts, a town with which he was familiar since he graduated from an Annapolis, Maryland, high school.

He spent a number of years with the New York Giants, and his positions with that team included Special Teams Coach and Defensive Assistant, Linebackers Coach, and Defensive Coordinator. He was a member of their coaching staff in 1987, when the New York Giants won the Super Bowl. Afterwards, he spent some time briefly with the Cleveland Browns and the New York Jets before signing on with the New England Patriots in 2005.

Since being with the New England Patriots, Belichick completed numerous achievements. In 2005 Belichick became the only NFL coach to win three Super Bowls in just four years. In that same year he also became the longest tenured coach currently in the NFL, and he won 100 games.
In 2006 Belichick won ten playoff games in a row, which was the longest streak in the history of the NFL.

He has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors during his lifetime, as well. In 2004, he received an honorary doctorate from both Boston University and the New England Institute of Technology. In 2005, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Wesleyan University.
Belichick was nominated for an ESPY Award in 2002 and 2004, and he won the ESPY for best coach/manager in 2005. Other awards he's won include the Associated Press 2003 Coach of the Year, and the 2004 Amos Alonzo Stagg Coaching Award.

There are numerous reasons Belichick is so well-known and admired among NFL coaches. His well-documented achievements show a history of extraordinary coaching.
