If you were like me, you had an exit strategy for Sunday’s football games. After 3 quarters of an ass Seahawks game I was ready to flip the channel. And if you did, if you had the nerve, guts, chutzpah (or balls) you turned to an NBA game. There were 3 games on: Sonics/Suns, Mavs/Blazers, and Raptors/Lakers. All were great and a hell of a lot more enjoyable than those two lame NFL games. Here’s what went down.
I viewed Sonics/Suns in its entirety. Can you believe that a Pistons/Jazz game last year had a final score of 64-62? Me neither. 152-149 was this one’s final score; this was an awesome game. In the 4th, Phoenix leads 124-123 with 15.5 seconds left and the ball is in Ray Allen hands. Allen gets Nash to fall down and uses that opportunity to drain a straightaway 3. Only 4.4 remain for Phoenix who put the ball in Boris Diaw’s hands. The defensive goes over to Diaw leaving Nash open for an open left-handed layup to send it to OT.
In the second OT, with just a minute left Rashard Lewis sails a pass to Radmanovic for a layup, his 22nd point of the night giving Seattle a 2-pt lead. The Suns get the ball back with 22.5 left. Nash had 28 and Marion had 37. Yet it was Raja Bell to step up with a midrange jumper to tie it at 149 apiece.
After Boris Diaw committed Phoenix’s final foul to give just 2.5 seconds remained. I took a moment appreciate what was on my television. Two things could happen. Either I see a classic game-winning shot in 2OT or it goes to triple-OT. It’s probably better I got choice A.
Ray Allen had just 10 in the first half but had come on for 39 points in the second half. Luke Ridnour was inbounding the ball and was looking for Allen all the way who finally got free of defender Kurt Thomas, who ran back to prevent Johan Petro from getting a dunk. Allen received the ball standing on the P of the PHX logo at halfcourt. The game’s highest scorer didn’t have a defender within 20 feet of him. Allen moved in about 6 feet to where he was a whopping 30-something feet away from the hoop. Add that with Shawn Marion, who had adjusted in time to come flying at Ray Allen. Nonetheless he catapulted a rainbow 3 to finish it off with 42.
If you were a Seattle native you saw the Seahawks reach the Superbowl and the Sonics win a tight one in the highest scoring NBA game in well over a decade. Raja Bell had a career-high 31 points. Luke Ridnour finished with a career-high 30 and had 16 in the 3rd to go along with 11 assists. Radmanovic had 22-10. Steve Nash had 16 assists and 8 rebounds to go along with his 31. Phoenix only played 8 men.
In Portland Steve Blake went on a rampage and scored 11 straight in the final minutes including a pair of 3’s to send it into OT. With the ballgame tied at 86 in OT, Theo Ratliff didn’t look when he was throwing the ball to Steve Blake. If he did then Devin Harris wouldn’t have scored a game-breaking 3-pt play on a layup. Other than Blake, Portland really folded in the end. Dallas won 95-89 to extend their win streak to five and cut the Blazers personal 4-game streak.
So what could possibly trump the highest scoring NBA game in 11 years? How about Kobe Bryant getting a new career high. Keep in mind his previous career-high was 62.
With the margin only 6 points against Toronto Phil Jackson sent Kobe out to play the 4th quarter. What will be lost in all this was that the Raptors actually led by 18 in the 3rd period. Bryant scored 27 in the 3rd to give LA the lead and had 53 through three quarters. I honestly don’t think that it would’ve mattered if every Raptor player was a reincarnated Michael Jordan in the 4th quarter. They forgot how close the game was and just started watching Kobe, watching Kobe hit a three, dunk the ball, whatever. As soon as the crowd saw Kobe enter the 4th, Toronto knew it was over.
All the time we see players get ridiculous numbers in half like 20 or 30 and then have a lousy 2nd half. Kobe scored 27 in the 3rd. Unbelievably, impossibly; Bryant outscored his 3rd quarter performance. You’ll have to use your imagination because I can’t describe how Bryant scored 28 in the 4th (well, he did take a ton of free-throws). Anyway he finished with 81! 81! You can’t make this up. The other Lakers combined for fewer points than Ray Allen in his performance. It marks the first time anyone has finished in the 80’s. It’s the second most points scored EVER in a game to Wilt’s 100.
Throw in another game-winner in the Sixers/T’Wolves game (that only 1/5th of the country had a chance to see) and you have a weekend that demolished what the NFL presented. When I wakeup in the morning I don’t want to see the headlines be “Panthers meet Steelers” without sharing half of it to Kobe Bryant and the Suns/Sonics game. If this Sunday proved anything it’s that there is something on Sunday other than football.
