Tennessee Titans Vs San Diego Chargers

1/5/08

by Kris Lazaro

The Tennessee Titans invade Qualcomm Stadium this Sunday afternoon as they take on the hometown San Diego Chargers for the last game of this NFL Wild Card Weekend.  The Titans were the last team last week to clinch a playoff, so it would be appropriate that they would also be the last team playing this weekend.  Oddsmakers have made the Chargers an opening 9-point home favorite, with betting action pushing the line to its current spread of Chargers –10.  The total has also dropped 2 points since opening:  it opened at 41 points, and is now down to 39 points in most sportsbooks at the time of writing.

The Titans will be looking to avenge an earlier loss to these same Chargers this Sunday as they were shell-shocked last December at home by the score of 23-17 (they failed to also cover the home underdog spread of 1.5 points).  Stud running back LaDainian Tomlinson scored the winning touchdown in overtime as the Chargers outlasted and out willed the Titans in a most gruesome and bone crunching game.  The Titans are 10-6 straight up this season, but a mere 8-8 against the number.  Away from honkytonkland, the Titans are 5-3 in both the straight up and against the spread ledger.  Superstar quarterback Vince Young will look to be running once again this Sunday, and the author likes these Titans in this spot, as this team is catching 10 points for a matchup that is shaping up to be a close affair.

The San Diego Chargers have been one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now.  They have won and covered 6 games in a row, and are looking to increase that streak to 7 games after Sunday.  They are 11-5 straight up and against the spread, while at home they are an impressive 7-1 straight up and against the number.  Head coach Nor Turner cannot be trusted in these types of situations.  Although the Chargers have been playing really well as of late, the author just cannot trust this team.  They have ongoing problems with their defense, and combined with the Titans motivation to win this game, the author recommends fading these Chargers.

Game prediction:  27-24 Chargers.
