Washington Redskins vs. Minnesota Vikingsby Kris Lazaro 12/23/07 The Washington Redskins hook up with the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday Night with the Vikings being an opening home favorite of 7 points (since then betting action has pushed the line down to Viking –6.5). Washington hopes to play spoiler and end Minnesota’s hopes for a postseason berth as the wild card representative for the NFC. Washington is 7-7 on the season and 5-7-2 against the number. Away from FedEx field, they are 3-4 straight up and 3-3-1 against the number. Although they are out of playoff contention, the Redskins continue to play hard: they have won their last 2 games, most recently beating the New York football Giants by the score of 22-10 (they covered as 6 point underdogs). Incidentally, the Redskins inadvertently helped out the Vikings by beating the team that the Vikings are chasing. Statistically, Washington is the inferior team, but emotionally, both teams will be equally emotionally charged. By just winning this game, the Vikings will continue to be in control of their fate for the postseason. With the Giants losing last Sunday, the Vikings will look to defend their homefield and capture yet another victory. For the season, the Vikings are 8-6 straight up and 7-5-2 against the number. At home they are 5-2 straight up and 4-3 against the number. They are coming off 5 straight victories, while covering 4 out of the set. The author sees a difficult game to handicap. Both teams will be playing to their potential, as the Redskins will try to play the role of spoiler and the Vikings are obviously trying to simply win the game to advance into postseason play. The Redskins control the majority of the game while the Vikings stay in the weeds. The home team eventually prospers in the 4th and captures the victory. Game prediction: 35-31 Minnesota. |
