Denver Broncos vs. San Diego Chargersby Kris Lazaro 12/23/07 The Denver Broncos invade the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night this week for an NFC West divisional rivalry game. This game will have a special start time of 8:00 Eastern instead of the usually 8:30 Eastern start time since Christmas Eve falls on a Monday this year. San Diego will look to improve its playoff positioning this week as it has already clinched a spot. Oddsmakers have made the hometown Chargers an opening 9-point favorite, with the line dropping to its current position of –8.5 due to betting action. The Denver Broncos have been a sub par team this year, having a 6-8 straight up record and a pathetic 4-10 record against the spread. On the road, they are a much worse team, going 2-5 and an abysmal 1-6 against the number. Head coach Mike Shanahan’s boys have been inconsistent, if not downright bad. Their defense is atrocious and their running game is in shambles. They are coming off a bye week after losing to the Houston Texans 31-13 last December 13th, 2007 as 2.5-point road favorites. Surely, the Broncos will look to spoil San Diego’s momentum, as it will try to play the role of spoiler. San Diego is perhaps playing its best football of the season, recently beating the Detroit Lions at home last Sunday by the score of 51-14 (they were 10-point home favorites). Led by star running back LaDainian Tomlinson, the Chargers rushed for 248 yards on the ground as it pounded the ball down the Lions’ throat. The Chargers are currently 9-5 on the season both straight up and against the spread, while being 6-1 at home straight up and against the number. The author sees a close game where both teams will answer each other’s score. Denver was humiliated the last time these two teams met in October (by the score of 41-3)—this time the score will be a lot closer than what most people believe. Game prediction: 28-27 San Diego. |
