Atlanta Falcons vs. Arizona Cardinals

by Kris Lazaro

12/23/07

The Arizona Cardinals host the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday in a game where the outcome will not determine any playoff races.  The Cardinals and the Falcons will all but play for pride this Sunday as these two teams are sub .500 teams with only 2 weeks left in the season.  Oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a hefty 10-point home favorite, with some shops moving the line up to 11 points.

The struggling Atlanta Falcons will once again be without head coach Bobby Petrino and will field a team that is perhaps one of the worst teams in the league.  On average the offensive unit is scoring 13.4 points per game, while the defensive unit is allowing 24.5 points per game.  For the season, they are 3-11 straight up, while going 6-8 against the spread.  On the road, they are a pitiful 1-6, but a strange 4-3 against the spread.  The only bright spot in this game for Atlanta is that this team is 7-3 against the number in their last 10 road games.  They are coming off a beating in Tampa Bay last Sunday, losing 37-3 as 12.5-point road underdogs.

The Arizona Cardinals are 6-8 straight up and 8-6 against the number this season, while also going 4-2 straight up and against the number at home.  They are a young team this year, and barely win the games that they are in.  Offensively, the unit is only scoring on average 23.3 points, while the defensive squad is allowing 25.2 points per contest.  These Cardinals are coming off back-to-back losses, with the most recent one coming from the New Orleans Saints by the score of 31-24 (the Cardinals failed to cover the 4 point road underdog spread).

The author sees a close game with the hometown Cardinals winning this game late in the game.

Game prediction:  24-20 Arizona.
