Washington Redskins vs. New York Giants
by Kris Lazaro
12/16/07
The Sunday Night game this week will pit NFC East division rivals against each other. The upstart New York Giants will play host to the Washington Redskins this Sunday night as 5 point favorites (the line originally opened at New York –7, but betting action has pushed the lines down to its current position).
The Washington Redskins are currently 6-7 on the season, while going 4-7-2 against the spread. They are 2-4 straight up and 2-3-1 against the number. The Skins are trying to avenge an earlier loss to the Giants this season, losing by the score of 24-17 (a game in which Washington played host). Although the Skins are currently on a slide, only winning 2 games in their last 7 games. The Skins need to build off their momentum, as they won their last game last Sunday, by the score of 24-16 against the Chicago Bears.
The New York Giants have been amazing this season. They are 9-4 on the season and 8-5 against the number. They actually are a better team on the road this season, going 5-1 on away from home. At the Meadowlands, though, they are 3-3 both straight up and against the number. The Giants have won 3 of their last 4 games, covering the spread in those victories. Head coach Tom Coughlin has been instrumental in providing this team with the spark necessary to win games. Historically, the Giants have been perennial chokers, but if the Giants win this Sunday against their rival, then their stage will be set for a potential run at this year’s playoffs.
The author sees a prototypical divisional rivalry game. Points will come at a premium and defense will rule the game. The Redskin defense will not allow Giants quarterback Eli Manning a chance to go wild this Sunday; conversely, the Giants defense will hamper any valiant attempts by Redskin quarterback Jason Campbell. The Giants win the game on a late field goal.
Game prediction: 16-13 New York.
