kris lazaroJacksonville Jaguars vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

by Kris Lazaro

12/16/07

In what should a classic game to watch, the Jacksonville Jaguars face a tough opponent in the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday.  Oddsmakers have made the Steelers an opening 4.5 point home favorite, but heavy action has lowered the tariff to 3.5 points (although some shops have dropped the line all the way down to 3 points at the time of writing).

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been one of the league’s best teams, as they have gone 9-4 both straight up and against the number (with two of those losses going against the division leading Indianapolis Colts).  On the road, they are 4-2 straight up and 5-1 against the spread (on a side note they are 6-4 ATS on grass).  Behind solid quarterback David Garrard, the Jaguars offense has been rather prolific.  They are scoring 23.5 points per game, with 344.6 yards of offense.  On the defensive side of the ball, the Jaguars have also been rather efficient.  They are allowing a meager 17.6 points per game, but are allowing a whopping 330.7 yards to the opposition’s offense.

The Steelers are coming off a 34-13 thrashing at the hands of New England last Sunday, by the score of 34-13 as 10.5 point underdogs.  Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looks to go spotless at home, where the Steelers are 7-0 straight up and 5-2 against the number. The Steelers main strength is still their defense, where they are allowing 14.5 points per game and 245.5 of total offense.  Amazingly, they are restricting their opposition running game to about 72.6 yards per game.

The author sees a good game to watch.  Both squads will be up for this game, as both are looking to the playoffs.  This will have that type of feel, where defense will rule.  The game will more than likely end in a field goal.  The author has a slight lean to the under for this game.

Game prediction:  17-16 Pittsburgh.
