The Detroit Lions invade the friendly confines of Qualcomm Stadium this Sunday as hefty double digit underdogs against the San Diego Chargers. Oddsmakers have made an opening line of San Diego –12.5, but with heavy betting action, the line has dropped to its current line of San Diego –10 points.
Quarterback Jon Kitna’s promise of a ‘good’ season will be put to the test this Sunday as his troops look to finish the season on a good note. With just 3 more games left in their season, the Lions need to start winning games again. They are currently on a 5 game losing streak, with their last loss coming against the powerful Dallas Cowboys by the score of 28-27. The Lions had a good chance of winning that game, but with poor coaching decisions and the inability to hold a lead, the Lions squandered perhaps a monumental upset over the Cowboys. The Lions are currently 6-7 straight up and 6-6-1 against the spread. They are averaging 22.6 points per game and allowing 26.1 points to the opposition.
The surprising San Diego Chargers have had resurgence in the later half of this season. They are currently 8-5 straight up and against the spread. At home they are 5-1 both straight up and against the spread. The Chargers’ latest victory came against the Tennessee Titans, where they scored a LaDanian Tomlinson rushing touchdown in overtime. In dramatic fashion, the Chargers outlasted the Titans by the score of 23-17 as 1.5 point road favorites. The Chargers are certainly playing the best football in the league right now and will surely be in playoff contention as the season winds down.
The author sees a close game in the beginning of the match, but the Charger’s class will shine in the second half. Kitna will be pressured into throwing into coverage and will eventually play poorly against a hunger defensive unit in San Diego.
Game prediction: 38-21 San Diego.
