The San Francisco 49ers host the Cincinnati Bengals this Saturday as the NFL begins to have its traditional Saturday games, in the weeks preceding the playoffs. In what should be a nasty game to watch, both teams enter this game as prohibitively the worst teams this season. Both teams have combined for 8 wins and 28 losses this season, a statistic that is both abysmal and unflattering.
The Bengals opened up as a decent 8 point road favorite to a team that has consistently been offensively anemic. Quarterback Carson Palmer looks to the air this Saturday as the Niners have one of the leagues’ worst defenses. They are allowing 24.0 points and 341.1 yards per game (the defensive unit is specifically allowing 217.6 aerial yards on average). Although the Bengal offense has been average, scoring 23.8 points per game, the author sees them overcoming the Niners this Saturday. They have a 5-8 straight up and against the spread record, but have an abysmal 1-5 record on the road (2-4 ATS). The Bengals come into this putrid game off a 19-10 home victory over lowly St. Louis as 10 point favorites.
The anemic Niners have been flat-out pitiful this year. They ‘boast’ an ‘impressive’ 3-10 straight and against the spread record, and are 1-5 straight up and against the number at home. Quarterback Trent Dilfer continues to struggle under center and fit into the Niner offense. They come into this game losing 27-7 to the hot Minnesota Vikings last Sunday. The Niner offense is averaging 13.2 points thus far in the season. The author predicts, though, that this offense may have some success against the Bengals defense (a unit that is allowing 25.1 points and 348.2 yards per game)
The author predicts a whopper of a game; a game in which there will be a lot of penalties and scoring. Both defensive units cannot stop a high school football team, while both teams can put up points—given the right conditions. The Niners ball thrower will have an easier time this Saturday, while the Bengals signal caller will likewise light up the scoreboard.
Game prediction: 44-31 Cincinnati
