kris lazaroCarolina Panthers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

by Kris Lazaro

12/8/07

The Carolina Panthers and the Jacksonville Jaguars will hook up this Sunday in a classic NFC South showdown.  Oddsmakers have made the homestanding Jaguars an opening 10.5 point favorite, with some shops already moving the line up to –12 at the time of writing.

The Panthers have had a horrible return from their bye week, going 1-5 straight up and against the spread since that time.  Back up quarterback Vinny Testaverde had a good first game against the Arizona Cardinals, but has since struggled.  He has a 56.25% completion percentage and a 71.2 quarterback rating.  Defensively, the defense has been mediocre this season for the Panthers.  As a unit, they are allowing 21.4 points per game and 315.1 total yards per game.

The Jaguars, on the other hand, are playing very good football as of late.  They are 8-4 on the season (both straight up and against the spread), with 2 of those losses coming against the Indianapolis Colts.  Quarterback David Garrard is a solid ball thrower, with a 104.7 quarterback rating and a 67.23% passing percentage.  Defensively, the Jaguars are allowing 18.6 yards per game.  This unit’s strength lies in its ability to stop the run, as evidenced by its average (allowing 96.7 yards on the ground).

The over / under for this game is currently set at 38 points.  The author believes that this is a very low total.  Although this is a divisional rivalry game, where low scores prevail, both offenses are solid (with the Jaguars’ a little bit more efficient).  The game will be entertaining to watch, with the Jaguars prevailing in the end.  Garrard’s quarterback play will be the difference as he will start to throw darts at the soft Carolina defense.  The Jags win this one in the 4th quarter behind Garrard’s golden arm.

Game prediction:  33-16 Jacksonville.
