Washington vs. Tampa Bay

by Kris Lazaro

11/23/07

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hope to continue and retain their lead in the NFC South as they host the Wasington Redskins this Sunday as 3 point home favorites.

The Buccaneers have found an offensive resurgence in quarterback Jeff Garcia and behind a solid defense, that is giving up a paltry 15.1 points per game.  The Bucs are 4-1 at home and 2-3 away from Tampa Bay.  They have a respectable overall 6-4 record against the spread and 4-1 ATS at home.  Tampa Bay should be a force in the South and could possibly go deep into the playoffs this year behind their staunch defensive unit.  Head coach Jon Gruden’s philosophy of defense first is certainly ringing true this year for the Bucs.

The Washington Redskins enter this matchup after valiantly losing against the powerful Dallas Cowboys 28-23 at Texas Stadium last Sunday.  Quarterback Jason Campbell has adjusted well to the Redskins system and is completing 60% of his passes thus far in the season.  Historically, the Redskins are a good bet as an underdog, for they pride themselves in keeping the game close with defense.  This is a team that is built to keep games within striking distance, thus receiving points is a bonus when backing the Redskins.

The over / under for this game is an interesting bet to consider.  The line opened up at 36.5, but was quickly bet up to 38.  Although both defenses are solid, and the game should be decided by a field goal or so, the author personally believes that this total is low.  Both offenses have showed that they can score, and with the history between these two teams showing no bias (5-5 for the over / under) for the total, the author feels that betting the over is a good bet.  The side can go either way.

Game prediction:  24-21 Tampa Bay.
