New Orleans Saints vs. Carolina Panthersby Kris Lazaro 11/23/07 An NFC South division matchup pitting the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers will occur this Sunday as the Panthers look to gain a foothold in their division as 3 point home underdogs. Both teams are currently 4-6 straight up, with the New Orleans Saints at 3-7 against the spread and the Carolina Panthers at 4-6 against the number. The Panthers hope to improve upon their dismal 0-4 record at home thus far behind old man quarterback Vinny Testaverde. Testaverde is actually not a bad quarterback, completing 54% of his passes. Carolina’s main problem this year lies in the fact that there defense is not what it used to be. They have allowed 102 points in their last 4 games—a trend that will not support winning. The New Orleans Saints have also been abysmal in defense, giving up 23, 37, and 24 points in their last 3 outings. Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been struggling this year finding his receivers. The Saints this year are dependent on their offense to win games—in games where they scored less than 20 points in a game they are 0-5 straight up and 0-5 against the number. Divisional rivalry games usually brings the best in both teams, may it be winning teams or losing teams. In this specific matchup, both teams are losing franchises. In this series the road team is 13-3 ATS in the last 16 games and 8-2 last ten games straight up. The author, though, wishes to warn bettors about the divisional home underdog angle, which states that field goal home underdogs do exceptionally well in these situations. Personally, the author recommends not playing a side for this game, but rather playing the under. The over / under is currently set at 41 points for the matchup, with the under going 3-7 for the under in the last ten meetings. If both teams hope to win this game, they must rely on a solid running game and staunch defense. Game prediction: 13-10 Carolina. |
