NFL Divisional Playoffs |
Minnesota Vikings vs. NY Giantsby Kris Lazaro 11/23/07 The surprising New York Giants, who are currently 7-3 on the season and a decent 6-4 against the number, host the struggling Minnesota Vikings who are 4-6 on the season and 4-4-2 against the spread. The Giants have been a surprise this year as they have been playing excellent football thus far. But, as history has shown, it is about this time of year when the Giants start to falter. The Giants, under head coach Tom Coughlin, perennially choke down the stretch—they usually have a strong beginning of the year and then taper of in the end. This matchup for the Giants does not bode well for them. Statistically, both teams look very similar on paper; yet, the author believes that the Vikings have a huge edge at the running back position.. The Vikings, though they have been struggling, have been anchored by their star running back, Adrian Peterson. Drafted from the Oklahoma Sooners, Peterson recently set the all-time single game rushing record against the San Diego Chargers, by rushing an unprecedented 296 yards on the ground. Specifically, for this matchup, Peterson can control the game and manage the clock if he can hold on to the ball without causing any turnovers. In betting terms, teams who are favored by 6 to 7 points and who are viewed by the public in general as a “lock” to win the game, usually lose the game straight up. In the NFL, teams who seem to win games usually are those that had no shot of winning the game before tipoff. All this negative talk seems to spur on the underdog team, and concurrently inflate the egos of the favored team. It is the author’s opinion that this will go down to the wire. Statistically, both teams seem to be even, but with the Vikings strong edge at running back, they have a great shot of winning this game straight up. Game prediction: 35-21 Vikings. |
