Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions
by Kris Lazaro
11/21/07
In a traditional Thanksgiving Day game, The Detroit Lions host the surprising NFC north division leading Green Bay Packers. The Lions enter this game losing its last 2 games, while the Packers have won 5 in a row. Oddsmakers have pegged the white hot Packers a 3 point road favorite, while books are moving this line closer to 4 at the time of writing.
The Lions have historically been a good bet at Thanksgiving, mainly because this team has treated this game as their Super bowl. For the last few years, the Lions have nothing to cheer about, and thus, this game has been rather important to them. This year though, quarterback Jon Kitna vowed a 10-win or more season, and thus far he and his team have delivered. They are currently 6-4 and are 4-1 at home in Detroit. Playing this game during Thanksgiving and against their division rival will have the Lions highly motivated for this game. They know that if they want to stay close in their divisional race, they have to win these types of games.
Brett Favre has been phenomenal this year. No accolades are enough to qualitatively describe his quarterback prowess, and it is this author’s opinion that he will carry his team deep into the playoffs. Yet, this will be a very tough game for the Pack. Off a short week and traveling, the Packers running game is still one of the league’s worse. They need to air out the ball once again against the Lions if they hope to pull out a victory this Thursday.
Detroit will once again be rocking this Thursday. In what should be a very entertaining divisional rivalry game, the authors sees a very close game, with the Lions pulling off the upset in the last few minutes of the game. Favre will once again have his way against this mediocre Lions secondary, but a few key turnovers late in the game will have the Lions in great field position for a dramatic last second field goal.
Game prediction: 24-21 Detroit.
