Jacksonville Jaguars Vs New England Patriots

1/12/08

by Kris Lazaro

The Jacksonville Jaguars face the cyborg New England Patriots this Saturday night in what promises to be a great game in Foxborough.  This will be the second of a double-header this Saturday as the second round of the NFL playoffs chugs on.  Oddsmakers made the hometown Patriots an opening 11.5-point favorite; with betting action pushing the line up to it’s current state of New England –13.5.

The Jaguars are coming off an emotional win against the Pittsburgh Steelers last Saturday.  After controlling much of the first half of the game, the Jaguars almost lost this game, as they let the Steelers offense come back.  But class eventually won out and the Jaguars pulled off the 31-29 victory, but failed to cover the 2.5-point road favorite spread.  The Jags are 12-5 straight up and 11-6 against the number.  On the road, the Jags are road warriors, as they are 6-3 straight up and against the number.  Their stud quarterback, David Garrard, will be solid once again and he tries to face a Patriots defense that is seeking redemption.

Although the Patriots went undefeated this season, their defense feels it could improve upon their successes.  On the season, the Patriots team went a spotless 16-0, but only 10-6 against the number.  At home they are 8-0 straight up and 5-3 against the number.  The author feels that the reason why the Patriots did so poorly against the number at the end of the season is because head coach Bill Belichick did not want to reveal his true plans for domination during the playoffs.  The Patriots are still a solid team and the author is willing to bet they will reach the Superbowl this year undaunted AND cover the spread along the way.

The Patriots win this game handily.  They show who is the boss and control this game from start to finish.

Game prediction:  38-7 New England.
