Alabama vs. Auburnby Kris Lazaro 11/23/07 This year’s edition of the Iron Bowl, where defense is king and the whole state of Alabama stops to watch the game, will be played in Auburn this Saturday night. The Alabama Crimson Tide will look to end its 5 year losing streak to the Auburn Tigers with new coach Nick Saban at the helm. Both teams will be coming off losses, with Auburn losing two weeks ago against the Georgia Bulldogs 45-20 and Alabama being embarrassed by the University of Lousiana-Monroe Warhawks by the score of 21-14 (Alabama lost as a 24.5 favorite). The game has always meant a lot to both teams, as the intrastate rivalry has created tension throughout the years. In fact between the years of 1907-1948, the rivalry was suspended because both teams could not come into agreement as to where the officiating crew would come from. The Crimson Tide specifically hired Saban to end their losing streak against the Tigers. Suffering back-to-back-to-back losses though will make this feat certainly more challenging, but according to Saban, this will just add to the mystique of this rivalry. Adversity usually brings about change, according to Saban. Change would certainly we a refreshing thought for many die-hard Tide fans. The Tigers come into this rivalry game with a bye-week, an angle that usually favors teams. Coach Tommy Tuberville of Auburn is denying any relevance of his moving to Texas A&M this past week. The keys to success of the Tigers will rely on their coach as it appears that both teams look statistically equal. Auburn is currently 7-4 and 5-5 against the spread this year, while Alabama is 6-5 and a paltry 2-8 against the spread. The author predicts a good old fashioned SEC battle in this game. Although both defenses have not been entirely solid, both teams match up well against each other. It what should be a close game, the points in this matchup should be golden. Game prediction: 38-35 Auburn. |
