FOOTBALL – Novak to Replace Injured Hall as Redskins' Kicker – October 10, 2006

Nick Novak, 25, will replace John Hall as the Washington Redskins' kicker for the second time in as many years. The Redskins signed Novak on Tuesday after the former University of Maryland kicker won a four-way competition among available free agents. He will fully handle the kicking duties starting on Sunday's game against Tennessee. As for Hall, the player was placed on injured reserve ending his season.

Novak was one of four candidates to audition for coaches and personnel officials. The other candidates were veteran free agents Todd Peterson and Jose Cortez, and Tyler Jones, who was with the Redskins in training camp this summer.

While Hall was sidelined last season, Novak kicked in five games for the Redskins. The newly-signed player converted 5-of-7 field-goal attempts, including a winning kick in overtime against Seattle. He was perfect in three field-goal tries with the Arizona Cardinals in 2005 during a five-game stint. Between the two teams, Novak made 8-of-10 field goals and all 15 of his extra point tries, for 39 points. His average field-goal conversion was for 32.5 yards, and his longest success being from 40 yards. Five of his conversions were from 35 yards or less. His two misses came only on blocked kicks from 38 and 39 yards.

As for Hall, 32, he spent his first six seasons of his career with the New York Jets and joined the Redskins in 2003 as an unrestricted free agent. But Hall is regularly injured He has been able to kick only once in all 16 games during the 2003 season. And again because of injuries, Hall appeared in a total of just 18 games in 2004-05. In the first five games of the season, however, Hall converted 9-of-11 field-goal attempts. But his job was already considered in jeopardy since Washington officials have been frustrated by the 10-year veteran's regular lack of availability because of injuries. For his career, Hall has connected on 203-of-272 field goals and 280-of-286 extra points.
